The Joy of Service
Sometimes, a simple word from a child reveals to us one of the beautiful truths of the Gospel
Alicia is seven years old. Last Sunday, she took part in Mass for the first time. With simplicity and enthusiasm, she discovered the joy of taking part in Mass and of offering something of herself. At the end of Mass, she said to me spontaneously: Father, I would like to serve every time
With her innocent words, Alicia reminds us that service is not a duty or a compulsory obligation, but a joyful response to God’s love. To serve means to offer our presence, our time and our gifts for God’s sake and for the sake of others
Through her service, this little girl has discovered that she has a place within the community. She does not come merely to receive, but to discover the joy of giving and of sharing in the life of the Church
In every act of service, even the simplest one, God gives us an opportunity to contribute to the growth of our community and to bear witness to His love
To serve with joy means to place ourselves in God’s hands, and to discover that our hearts become even more joyful when we give of ourselves with love
